The Hunger Games

Concept Artist / Visual Effects

The Hunger Games is a 2012 American science fiction film series based on the trilogy of novels of the same name written by Suzanne Collins. The film is set in a dystopian post-apocalyptic future in the nation of Panem, where a boy and a girl from each of the nation's 12 Districts are chosen annually as "tributes" and forced to compete in ‘The Hunger Games’, an elaborate televised fight to the death. Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) volunteers to take her younger sister's place when her sister was initially selected as tribute. With her district's male tribute, Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson), Katniss travels to the Capitol to train and compete in the games.

To help create a lasting impression for the first installment in The Hunger Games trilogy, Robert and the team created exceptionally realistic shots that blended in perfectly throughout the film. Virtually all production photography took place in North Carolina. The VFX team designed and created touch screen desktops, monitor content, and the central data-generated hologram representing the Arena.

The movie’s visual effects are true-to-life. So much so that the audiences might not even realize that most arrows, knives and other weapons seen in the movie were created using CG technology. Other VFX shots include holograms, quails, a hawk, parachutes and the dummies and weapons used in the Training Room, as well as crowd simulations for the Theatre and District 12.
